If God, with the instrument of the Jewish nation, prepared the world for the arrival of His Messiah about 2000 years ago, would He not also prepare it for the return of the Messiah, for His second coming? In between these two events, world history again needs to be lined up accordingly. It is reasonable to believe that the 20th Century events in the Middle East - especially in and around the City of Jerusalem - are preparatory for God's ushering in the "messianic period" during which the Messiah will reign on earth (Kingdom of God, Millennial or Messianic Kingdom).
If this coming glorious period were eliminated from world history by interpreting it as simply part of the timeless eternity when God will make a new heaven and a new earth, there would be no need for a preparatory interim-period within our present space-time continuum. In that case, the allegorical interpretation of end-time prophecy is the only option. However, it does not seem to be logical for the second set of prophecies (concerning the time of and around the Second Coming) to be interpreted allegorically while the Bible insists that the first set was fulfilled literally (see section VIII).
If literal interpretation of prophecy (see Introduction to TIC) were to be ruled out, what solid grounds would we have to believe that our very own salvation is anything more than allegorical? Both the reemergence on the scene of history of the city of Jerusalem at the end of the second millennium and the prophecies of Zechariah concerning the city contradict the allegorical option. These considerations seem to justify the use of the term 'millennial Kingdom' in a temporal-geographical sense. It indicates that the end-time events are part of time and thus distinct from eternity. The city of Jerusalem is at the top of the UN agenda and whatever the injustices and contradictions in today's Israel may be, prophecy has begun to be fulfilled in this preparatory interim period. Our presentation in this section may not seem to provide enough clarity and detail for some who desire greater proof. Yet God's Word and world history again confirm what Zechariah wrote "Proclaim further: This is what the LORD Almighty says: 'My towns will again overflow with prosperity, and the LORD will again comfort Zion and choose Jerusalem.'"
